The German-Italian Law Program is designed after the very successful models of the Bachelor of Laws Cologne/Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne), Cologne/University College London and the new Cologne/Istanbul Altınbaş Program and thus adds to the binational double degree programs of the Faculty of Law at the University of Cologne.

The goal of the program is not only to obtain the "Bachelor of Laws" (LL.B. Cologne/Florence), but also the degree "Erste Prüfung" in Germany, and "Laurea magistrale in Giurisprudenza italiana e tedesca" in Italy. Both the "Erste Prüfung" and the "Laurea magistrale in Giurisprudenza italiana e tedesca" are admission requirements for post-university education in order to be able to exercise the legally regulated legal professions such as judge, public prosecutor or lawyer.

Bachelor students can therefore enroll simultaneously in the "Erste Prüfung" and "Laurea magistrale in Giurisprudenza italiana e tedesca" law programs in Cologne and Florence. The contents of the Bachelor's program correspond to the contents of the first four years of the Laurea program and the German basic studies of the Law "Erste Prüfung" program. The German intermediate legal examination will therefore be aquired in the third and fourth years without attending additional courses as part of the bachelor's degree program.

To obtain the "Laurea magistrale in Giurisprudenza italiana e tedesca", an additional year after the Bachelor's degree is required. This fifth year is offered as an independent master's program by Cologne and Florence. In this way, students acquire the Bachelor's and Master's degrees and the five-year degree "Laurea magistrale in Giurisprudenza italiana e tedesca".

If the graduate sees his or her professional future in Germany, it is advisable to complete the "Erste Prüfung" - consisting of an examination in the area of specialization at the university (30%) and the mandatory state examination (70%) - which can be taken after about two to three more semesters. If the studies are continued at the University of Cologne, the Bachelor's final grade can be included in the overall grade of the "Erste Prüfung" as the area of specialization.

This model has already been successfully practiced for years in the above-mentioned German-French and German-English degree programs and is also the basis for the German-Turkish degree program.
