A unique German-Turkish degree program

The course was approved by the Turkish Higher Education Council in 2012, then by the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Science in spring 2013 and accredited in Germany in summer 2013. The first ten students from Turkey came to Cologne in December 2012 to learn the German legal language as part of a preparatory year and then begin the study program on German and Turkish law together with the participants from Germany in the 2013/2014 winter semester. A total of 30 participants - 15 from İstanbul Altınbaş Üniversitesi and 15 from the University of Cologne - will study together for four years.

The program aims to give high school graduates with Turkish language skills in Germany and graduates of German-language schools in Turkey the opportunity to get to know both legal systems and acquire the corresponding degrees. It is primarily aimed at students who already have an excellent knowledge of German and Turkish at the beginning of their studies and preferably (but not necessarily) a good knowledge of English.

The course has two main objectives: Firstly, to provide training in both national legal systems as well as European law. Different methods of legal application techniques are acquired. The understanding of different legal cultures is promoted. All in all, this increases the possibility of cross-border professional employment. The aim of the first four-year binational German-Turkish Bachelor's degree course in Law is to qualify participants for legal work not only specifically in legal relations between Germany and Turkey, but also, if interested, in international legal relations in general.
