Halide Edip Adivar-year 2013/14

Namesake

The fourth year started their studies in the winter semester 2013 and was named after Ms Halide Edip Adivar.

Ms Adivar is a famous writer and women's rights activist in her home country. She lived from 1884 to 1964, initially receiving a traditional Ottoman education, but then attending the American Girls College in Istanbul as the only Muslim girl, and after marriage and divorce, working as a teacher and school inspector.

She made an early contribution to the education system. In 1919, she established herself as a leading figure of Turkish patriotism with a speech in Istanbul against the Greek occupation of Izmir. She joined the Liberation Army as a close associate of Atatürk when British troops invaded Istanbul in 1920. She remained politically active after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. Adivar became a representative of modern Turkey with regular lectures at the Sorbonne, Oxford and Cambridge, lecture tours of the USA and helping to establish the Islamic University in New Delhi at the personal invitation of Gandhi.

In 1939, she returned to Turkey after Atatürk's death, first working as a lecturer at Istanbul University before being elected to parliament as an independent member in 1950. She died in Istanbul in 1964. She wrote 21 novels, several volumes of stories and plays.
