Financing the Stay Abroad
Erasmus+ funding for semesters abroad
The European education programme Erasmus+ enables students to complete part of their studies at a European partner university and offers numerous attractive incentives in the process:
- the waiving of tuition fees at the partner university,
- a mobility grant,
- established network structures,
- simplified nomination and application procedures at the partner universities,
- often free or low-cost language courses.
Students who are accepted for a spot at an Erasmus partner university automatically receive this financial support. The amount of funding depends on the country in which the study abroad is spent. The minimum funding period is 60 days.
You can find an overview of the Erasmus programme countries here.
Information on the current funding rates can be found on the website of the International Office.
Swiss European Mobility Programme
There are also partnerships with universities in Switzerland (Fribourg, Lausanne) which are funded in a similar way to ERASMUS within the framework of the Swiss European Mobility Programme.
You can find further information here.
BAföG abroad
To ensure that everyone can take advantage of a stay abroad, BAföG is available to everyone who is basically eligible for funding.
For more information, please visit the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

You can find more information on funding opportunities on the International Office website and through the DAAD scholarship database.
Study abroad as a so-called free mover
Next to the faculty's partnerships, students are also given the opportunity to organize their studies abroad independently. In this case, a high degree of self-organization is required in advance and during study.
For this purpose, too, the advisory and support facilities at the Center for International Relations are open. Further information are available at the International Office.
Self-organised studies abroad can lead to high costs, so applying for scholarships can make sense.
Support abroad for students with child(ren)
The scholarship "Study Abroad with Child(ren)" is offered to support student parents financially and in planning a stay abroad. The preparation time is significantly longer for these projects abroad, the planning itself is also more uncertain and a considerable financial outlay must be expected.
The department "International Mobility", in close cooperation with the department "Dual Career & Family Support" (CFS) of the University of Cologne, has therefore raised funds and announces scholarships to encourage this target group to tackle a stay abroad as well.
You can find more information on the website of the International Office.
