Ernst Reuter-Year 2014/15

Namesake

The participants of the 5th year started their studies at the University of Cologne in the winter semester 2014/2015. This class was named after the politician Ernst Reuter, who found refuge in Turkey during the National Socialist era. Ernst Reuter had been a member of the SPD since 1912, for which he first became a city councillor for transport in Berlin in 1926 and later Lord Mayor of Magdeburg. As an active Social Democrat, Ernst Reuter was considered an enemy of the National Socialist regime. He was arrested in the summer of 1933 and shortly afterwards sent to a concentration camp.  After his sudden release and subsequent new arrests, Ernst Reuter fled into exile in Turkey, where he worked, among other things, as an advisor in the Ministry of Economics and as a lecturer at the Ankara Academy of Administration, before returning to Berlin after the end of the war and being elected Lord Mayor there in 1948.
